UK – ULMA Packaging UK has named James Couldwell as Managing Director, following the retirement of its former longer-standing MD, Chris Pickles.

Couldwell previously worked at ULMA between 2016 and 2020 as a financial controller and regional sales manager.

His return to the business will involve focusing on expanding market share for the UK division and growing the brand in the food and medical sectors – to try to boost ULMA’s position as a leading machinery manufacturer and supplier.

On his appointment Couldwell said: “I’m incredibly pleased to be returning to ULMA UK as managing director, taking over from my predecessor Chris Pickles.

“Chris has been an invaluable leader during his tenure, advancing the brand to one of the most recognizable and respected packaging machinery providers in the industry.

“I credit Chris as being the person who taught me what it takes to be an effective and diligent manager, providing me with the necessary skills to follow in his footsteps.

James has already begun making his mark on the business, having now successfully filled all vacancies and added further support to the service and marketing department.

Following this recruitment drive, James is highly confident ULMA can continue to go from strength to strength offering its customers best possible service and market-leading machinery.

“Having previously worked as a financial controller and regional sales manager at ULMA, I am extremely familiar with the business and know what moves and changes I want to make to continue growth,” he added.

“The newest members of our teams will allow us to expand our clientele and assist businesses in choosing the best machinery for their wants and needs.

“I intend to hit the ground running and continue to build the ULMA brand as a leading food and medical packaging supplier.”

Chris Pickels, Managing Director at ULMA Packaging UK, commented: “Over the last two years, James has gone above and beyond to demonstrate excellent managerial qualities and commercial awareness to drive numerous initiatives to fruition, with great success.

“James’ invaluable understanding of how the ULMA Packaging UK, and the wider global operations work will allow him to bridge the gap between customers and our innovative packaging machinery solutions, becoming the face that clients come to know and value.”

Since joining the company in 2016, Couldwell has been fortunate enough to work across a number of new business and service developments in order to grow and improve operations at ULMA Packaging UK.

“Over time, this has naturally led to a change of role whereby I can take this knowledge and insight of ULMA’s diverse and comprehensive range of packaging machinery to customers across the South of England,” he concludes.
