UK – Luxembourg-based company Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP) has announced plans to build a sustainable ’Efficient Furnace’ that will minimize greenhouse gas emissions from the glass production process.

AGP says the furnace will use the latest industrial technology to provide a more efficient melter with reduced gas consumption and carbon emissions.

It also contains an additional gas filtration process, using filter technology to combat other emissions elements and reduce them to levels substantially below current industrial standards.

This will substantially minimize produced emission levels to below the existing industrial standards.

Alongside the latest technological developments and the installation of the furnace, the company is planning to commence progressive training initiatives to support the development of employees at its facility by equipping them with the required skillsets and knowledge.

Greg Methven, Operations Director, said: “Ardagh Glass Packaging – Doncaster’s Efficient Furnace project will improve efficiency at the facility while reducing its carbon footprint.

“The grant support provided has been a key enabler in upgrading the project from a standard cross-fired furnace to more energy-efficient, end-fired furnace technology.

“We would like to thank the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for their funding support on this project and also our partners, Glass Futures, for their collaboration on the grant application process.”

The new furnace is being installed as part of AGP’s broader project that is being partially funded by the government’s Industrial Energy Transformation Fund.

This grant primarily provides support to businesses with high energy consumption to help them transition to a low-carbon future.

The new technology is a key part of Ardagh Group’s Sustainability Strategy, which targets a NOx emission intensity reduction of 23% by 2030.

Meanwhile, early this month AGP signed a supply agreement with US-based brewery Sprecher Brewing to provide glass bottles for Sprecher Brewing’s entire range of beer and beverage products.

For the implementation of this approach, Sprecher Brewing’s team worked in close coordination with AGP’s product design team to bring out a new upgraded custom glass bottle.

Sprecher Brewing CEO and president Sharad Chadha said: “Sprecher’s craft sodas deliver this in an attractive, custom 16oz glass bottle – a staple of our brand.

“The high-quality glass bottles provide premium shelf appeal and a vessel for locking in freshness to protect the taste and flavor of our products. Sprecher truly represents happiness in a bottle.”

According to Ardagh, their 100% and infinitely recyclable glass bottles require nearly 30 days to transform from discarded bottles in the recycling bin to new product bottles on the store shelf.
